Leylah Annie Fernandez

Canada's Leylah Annie Fernandez had a fantastic run to the U.S. Open championship. She lost to 18-year-old Emma Raducanu from the UK. The 19 year old defeated defending champion and No. 3 ranked player Naomi Osaka, Elina Svitolina, who is ranked No. 5. In the semi-finals, Fernandez beat No. 4 ranked player Aryna Sabalenka. 

At the end of the match she had a moving tribute to the New York crowd on the 20th anniversary of 9/11.

"I know on this day it's especially hard for New York and everyone around the United States. I just want to say that I hope I can be as strong and resilient as New York has been the past 20 years."

On the last day of August in Calgary, the Canadian women's hockey won their first gold since 2012 at the 2021 IIHF Women's World Championship. Marie-Philip Poulin scored in overtime for the 3-2 victory over the United States.

Poulin scored the overtime goal at 7:22 on a 3-on-3 from Brainne Jenner. At first the goal was waved off but the women began jumping on top of one another in a celebration of the goal. During the celebration Blayre Turnbull, assistant captain, suffered a leg injury.

The Canadian born Seattle Seahawks' TE has decided to leave the game of football one day after re-signing with the team. In a statement that he posted on Twitter, Willson stated "that this off-season I went through some health issues and spent numerous days in the hospital with a severe pericardial effusion".

 Golden State Warriors', Stephen Curry and his wife, Ayesha, are working with Davidson College, Steph’s, alma mater, to launch the Curry Family Women's Athletics Initiative. The scholarship will focus on elevating women's athletics.  

The unknown amount is to start a scholarship fund with hopes of encouraging other donors. They want to help Davidson's more than 200 female athletes.

ESPN has cancelled Rachel Nichols show The Jump, 2 months after she was caught saying a colleague's (Maria Taylor) promotion was diversity-related. On Instagram Nichols stated "Got to create a whole show and spend five years hanging out with some of my favorite people talking about one my favorite things. An eternal thank you to our amazing producers & crew -- 'The Jump' was never built to last forever but it sure was fun. More to come"

Milwaukee Bucks Giannis Antetokounmpo bought a share in the Milwaukee Brewers MLB team back in May.  The news was only released now because they wanted to be focused on the NBA and the start of the Brewers' season. Antetokounmpo signed a five-year, $228 million contract extension in December 2020.

BC Lions Home Opener

The BC Lions of the CFL (Canadian Football League) had their home opener Saturday, June 17, 2023

They played the Edmonton Elks at BC Place in Vancouver, BC.

The Lions’ offence got  its first and only touchdown of the game in the third quarter.  

 The B.C. Lions wiped out the Edmonton Elks 22-0 in front of their home fans.  

 This was the Lions' third shutout in franchise history. The last one was one was in 1977. 

.   The Lions will put their 2-0 record on the line next week when they travel to  Winnipeg to face the Blue Bombers
